Born in the Netherlands and raised in South Africa, Ghislaine began her design journey studying interior design at Philadelphia University. After graduating and moving to New York City, she started out designing commercial office spaces and later established her firm in 1999 when commissioned to do a complete build out of a 9,000 sq-ft office and art gallery in the Starrett Lehigh Building in New York’s Chelsea art district. Since then the studio has completed many residential, commercial and hospitality projects ranging from apartments, townhouses, lofts, offices and even a coffee shop in New York City, to offices and homes in Los Angeles, New Jersey, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Florida (Miami, West Palm Beach & Hobe Sound).

Formerly Bernard Trainor + Associates, we are now Ground Studio, honoring the collaboration inherent in our team of artists and designers working together to envision and craft contextual California landscapes. We thoughtfully balance the character of the land, the identity of the architecture, and the lifestyles of people who live there. Designing in a range of scales from compact urban gardens to expansive rural sites, we listen and observe to ensure the essence of the place is revealed. Our designs inspire a deep connection with the land.
